North School Profile
North Elementary, located on Highway 57 North, currently serves approximately 420 children in grades Kindergarten through sixth. The building, constructed in 1955 and renovated in 1990, provides a safe and welcoming environment conducive to learning with a staff dedicated to helping all students reach their potential. The facility currently includes 17 classrooms, 4 resource rooms, an auditorium, gymnasium, library, art/music suite, and a large playground including athletic fields. The faculty, staff and parents accept and share the responsibility of providing students within a great place for children to grow and learn. The PTO is key to the successful operation of the school. Volunteers support school activities in the library, mentoring students, sponsoring the yearbook, book fair and assisting with many special events throughout the year.
Our curriculum is based on the Indiana College and Career Ready Standards and is supplemented with special programs and methods that include the Simple Six writing process, Dynamic Indicators for Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), and MindPlay Virtual Reading Coach, and I-Ready Math. Through collaboration of general education and resource teachers, individual student needs are met. Faculty members are determined to provide the highest quality educational opportunities for all students.
Students in first through sixth grades have an opportunity to participate in after-school enrichment activities including: Just Say No, Spell Bowl, Math Bowl, along with boy’s basketball, girl’s basketball and girl’s volleyball. Fifth and sixth grade students also participate in Student Council, assisting with various activities throughout the school and serving as role models and leaders for the K-6 student body. During the school year students look forward to the Talent Show, Red Ribbon Week and other special celebrations and incentives.
Each day at North begins with students arriving and walking to the gym or the cafeteria. If students wish to eat breakfast at school they go to the cafeteria. If not, they head to the gym to walk and visit with friends. As the 8:00 o’clock bell approaches, the students are dismissed to their classrooms where their teachers greet them. As part of our routine, we then recite the Pledge of Allegiance, observe a moment of silence, and share any announcements that need to be shared.
