eLearning

ELearning is the use of technology to access learning outside of the traditional classroom. ELearning allows teachers to deliver lessons and provide for student learning through online resources. The use of eLearning minimizes disruptions from inclement weather to keep productive instructional days on the school calendar.

(Ansychronous) eLearning: Students access their elearning assignments online at home and complete their assignments at their own pace. 

Remote (Synchronous) Instruction: At least half of the elearning day's lessons will include live instruction with the student's teacher(s) online via Google Meet.

The Washington Community Schools’ administrative team will evaluate every potential in-person cancellation separately. If time allows, Chromebooks will be sent home with students to be ready to facilitate an eLearning Day. 

For situations that come about quickly (an overnight snow) and not all K-12 students have their devices at home, the WCS administrative team will likely use a “snow day” and have the instructional day made up on a pre-scheduled make-up day in the school calendar, or rely on households to use personal devices to complete their assignments.  

Free Public WI-FI

School Grounds: All of our school building WIFI networks extend to outside areas like the immediate sidewalks around the buildings, and in some cases, the parking lots.

Washington Carnegie Library: The library has free Wi-Fi access and can accommodate an unlimited amount of students with their own devices.  There is an unattended children policy of age 8 and under (must be accompanied by an adult or someone over 14).

For students needing a device who are 14 and older- they can also use 14 wired computers. For students under 14, there are 2 computer stations in our youth department.  Limits on each computer is an hour but students can stay on for an additional hour if no one is waiting.

If something is not working correctly with the student’s device or there is a problem with accessing a digital resource, please attempt to communicate the problem to your student’s teacher. The teacher will submit a help desk ticket to the WCS IT department who will review the problem and provide necessary directions or information for resolving the problem.

For Washington Community School students, the responsibility of having students take their assigned device and chargers is an important one. School devices should only ever be used for school related activities. 

We ask parents and guardians to help your child handle the device properly while at home and keep all the pieces (chargers, chords, etc.) in one spot. Students should return with all devices/equipment on the return of in-person school. Finally, please keep in mind that any lost or damaged devices will be the responsibility of the student’s family. Please report any damages as soon as you can to the student’s teacher.  

Teachers have designated times throughout the school day to respond to emails and assist students. Remote Learning Office hours will be less due to the Live Instruction being provided. Students can seek assistance during this time. Questions can be asked through email, Google Classroom, or ParentSquare.

Attendance will be taken based on both completion of assignments, online attendance taken via Google Meet, or communication with the student's teacher by email or phone during  an eLearning/Remote Instruction day. 

Students having difficulty completing assignments at home due to technical difficulty will have time to complete assignments once school resumes.
