A Journey of Growth, Leadership, and Opportunity

When Steven first moved from Puerto Rico to Washington, Indiana, the transition was anything but easy. Leaving behind friends, family, and the only home he had ever known was heartbreaking. But after a devastating hurricane impacted Puerto Rico, his family made the difficult decision to relocate in search of new opportunities.

“I was sad that I had to move from my hometown,” he shared. “But I understood why we had to move. Looking back now, I’m glad we did because I would have missed out on so many opportunities here in Washington.”

Arriving in a new country brought challenges beyond simply adjusting to a new school. One of the biggest obstacles was learning English. At the time, he knew very little of the language, making communication and schoolwork especially difficult.

“It was really tough to understand instructions from my teachers and communicate with others,” he said. “It took a couple of years before I became fluent.”

Through determination, hard work, and the support of teachers at Washington Community Schools, he steadily improved his English skills. By junior high, he felt confident communicating fluently, a milestone that opened doors both academically and socially.

Washington Community Schools became more than just a place to learn English. It became the foundation for discovering new passions and future career goals. During high school, he developed strong interests in both robotics and military leadership through NJROTC.

One of the most impactful experiences came through robotics, where teamwork, coding, and precision all came together in competition.

“One particular project that had a big impact on me was getting the robot to move and score points on its own,” he explained. “Even a slight error could make the robot miss completely. Once we got it working, we started creating more complex pathing that made our team even more competitive.”

His passion for robotics also inspired him academically. Motivated by a love for programming and problem-solving, he challenged himself with rigorous coursework, including multiple Advanced Placement classes, while continuing to build technical skills through robotics.

NJROTC offered a different kind of growth. Initially unsure if military programs would be the right fit, he quickly discovered a welcoming environment that helped him develop leadership and communication skills while learning about Navy history and teamwork.

“At first, I thought the military would always be very tense and strict,” he said. “But NJROTC was relaxing and pretty fun. I learned leadership skills, communication skills, and saw how much potential I really have in the military.”

Now, as graduation approaches, he is preparing for his next chapter at Purdue University, where he plans to major in Computer Engineering on a Navy ROTC Scholarship. He is especially excited about joining university programs, meeting new people, and connecting with others who share his interests.

“What excites me most is meeting new people who are interested in the same things I am,” he said. “It can be nerve-racking, but I think it’ll be a great experience.”

Reflecting on his journey, he hopes younger students, especially those learning English as a second language, remember the importance of perseverance.

“Give your best effort and never give up on your schoolwork,” he advised. “Learning another language opens up so many opportunities for your future. It’s worth all the effort.”

From overcoming language barriers to excelling in robotics, leadership, and academics, his story is one of resilience and determination, a powerful example of how challenges can become opportunities for success.
