Our Community Foundation has announced the recipients of the second-semester Teaching Innovator Grants. Washington Community Schools received a $250 grant to support STEM Day.  Washington Veale Elementary Teacher, Flo Lloyd, accepted the award and was named a Teaching Innovator.

This project will enable students to engage in hands-on STEM activities that help them develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, reflecting the innovative, iterative nature of real-world development. Students at Veale participate in a STEM class each week with engaging activities ranging from computer coding to STEM building challenges. This year, as a culminating year-end project, Loyd is planning a STEM Day for the students. During this time, they will visit various hands-on stations to program robots, build circuits, explore chemistry, and participate in other STEM challenges.

Lloyd states that "our goal as educators is to provide our students with experiences that extend beyond the school building and get them excited about the possibilities for their future. Exposing students to hands-on science and engineering demystifies these fields, making future careers seem within their reach. The world our students will enter upon graduation will be filled with opportunities and challenges we can't even imagine right now. Our task is to develop critical thinkers who persevere through challenges and opportunities like this. This is a step in the right direction."

Our Community Foundation is proud to support innovative teaching methods in all our area schools. We appreciate our donors' generosity in making this grant possible.
