Board Briefs March 16, 2023

Information Report

The board recognized Washington High School Senior Ben Myers, who has been named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. Ben is one of approximately 15,000 students nationwide named to the prestigious program. He will now be considered for the National Merit Scholarship Award. 

JH students Grant Fry and Brooks Chestnut, JH Robotics Coach Tamara Delisle presented to the board information about their successful Hatchet Ratchex Robotics Season. The JH Robotics team recently won the Motivate Award for the work they did on their Engineering Portfolio. View Portfolio

Integration Specialist Nikki Sparks shared with the board information about district STEM technology, STEM Kits, robotics, and programs being utilized across the district, such as Cricut machines, Glowforge, 3D printers, green screens, Microbits, robotic arms, and coding with Sphero robots.  

Assistant Superintendent Steve Peterson shared with the board information about the Jr. High School Improvement Grant. WCS is joining RTZ, or Rural Transformation Zone, a cohort with Western Wayne & Wes Del school districts to work with Equitable Education Solutions on five levers, or areas of focus. The five levers are Equitable Learning Environment, Inclusive Educational Setting, Literacy, Mathematics, and Employability Skills. 

The RTZ grant will allow us to hire our own RTZ Director, a Literacy Coach, and a Math Coach. The RTZ team will be heavily focused on grades 5-8, and EES will partner with WCS to expand this model across the district, aligning all school improvement grants to the 5 levers.
