Sixth-grade PLTW teacher Lisa Emmick recently added STEM Education to her license through a new partnership program with the Indiana Department of Education and the Education Service Centers of Indiana that funds coursework for teachers seeking full licensure.
The Indiana STEM Educator Expansion Initiative funds tuition, books, and material fees for both currently licensed teachers in non-STEM areas, as well as prospective teachers who are not licensed but hold a bachelor’s degree, to become licensed to teach a STEM subject. “In today’s technology-driven world, it has never been more important for every Indiana student to have access to high-quality STEM instruction, and this starts with ensuring we have the very best and brightest educators in the classroom,” said Indiana Secretary of Education Katie Jenner.
Principal Jay Wildman is proud to share Mrs. Emmick’s accomplishments. “Mrs. Emmick continues to put students first. For years she has stretched her teaching in the STEM world and she has been glad to grow in that area. Community members might not be aware of all the areas that are taught in her 6th-grade classroom. Design process, Artificial intelligence, 3-D printing, and Project Lead the Way - Robotics, are all covered in her classroom. These topics all require special training which Mrs. Emmick has willingly participated in. Now she has even gone through this STEM Certified Teacher program. That certification is a feather in her cap and only helps benefit her students that much more.”
“The future careers of our students will most likely be STEM-related. Whether it is employment, enrollment, or enlistment, STEM will undoubtedly be a part of it. I am always excited to explore new methods and ideas for teaching these areas to our students,” Mrs. Emmick shared.
Washington Community Schools is committed to expanding STEM education and empowering our students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a rapidly changing, diverse, and technical society.
