eLearning

ELearning is the use of technology to access learning outside of the traditional classroom. ELearning allows teachers to deliver lessons and provide for student learning through online resources. The use of eLearning minimizes disruptions from inclement weather and situations related to the COVID-19 pandemic to keep productive instructional days on the school calendar.

The Washington Community Schools’ administrative team will evaluate every potential in-person cancellation separately. If time allows, necessary equipment like Chromebooks and MIFIs will be sent home with students to be ready to facilitate an eLearning Day. For situations that come about quickly (an overnight snow) and not all K-12 students have their devices at home, the WCS administrative team will likely use a “snow day” and have the instructional day made up on a pre-scheduled “make up day” in the school calendar.  

 

The schedule for an eLearning Day will generally be like a regular school day. However, a student’s schedule will vary based on the student’s age and grade level. The following provides guidance for what to expect for each building level:

Washington High School

Washington High School teachers and students will operate on their regular bell schedule.  Students are expected to be present for any live Google Meet sessions. Students will receive information and directions for the day through their class period’s Google Classroom.

Washington Jr. High School

Washington Junior High School teachers and students will operate on a modified bell schedule that allows for WJHS teachers to check in live with their students for each period.  Once the modified schedule portion of the day is over, students are expected to use the remainder of the eLearning Day to complete assignments and/or seek help from their teachers through Google Meet and/or email. 

The following is the WJHS eLearning schedule:

Period 1	8:30-8:45
Period 2	8:50-9:05
Period 3	9:10-9:25
Period 4	9:30-9:45
Period 5	9:50-10:05
Period 6	10:10-10:25
Period 7	10:30-10:45
10:45 to 3:00 pm	Students should use this time for lunch, completing assignments, or seeking help from their teacher through sending an email or scheduling a Google Meet.

 

 

Washington Elementary Buildings: Washington Primary, Washington Intermediate, Washington Upper Elementary, and Washington Veale Elementary.

Washington Community Schools’ elementary students should check their teacher’s eLearning Day lesson template (found in the eLearning Day portal on the WCS website) for information and directions for the school day. Generally, teachers will provide a mix of live instruction (Google Meets) and post learning activities through Google Classroom and SeeSaw.  

 

Free Public WI-FI

School Grounds-  All of our school building WIFI networks extend to outside areas like the immediate sidewalks around the buildings, and in some cases, the parking lots.

Washington Carnegie Library- 

The library has free Wi-Fi access and can accommodate an unlimited amount of students with their own devices.  There is an unattended children policy of age 8 and under (must be accompanied by an adult or someone over 14).

For students needing a device who are 14 and older- they can also use 14 wired computers. For students under 14, there are 2 computer stations in our youth department.  Limits on each computer is an hour but students can stay on for an additional hour if no one is waiting.

If something is not working correctly with the student’s device or there is a problem with accessing a digital resource, please attempt to communicate the problem to your student’s teacher. The teacher will submit a help desk ticket to the WCS IT department who will review the problem and provide necessary directions or information for resolving the problem.

For Washington Community School students, the responsibility of having students take their assigned device and chargers is an important one. School devices should only ever be used for school related activities. We ask parents and guardians to help your child handle the device properly while at home and keep all the pieces (chargers, chords, etc.) in one spot. Students should return with all devices/equipment on the return of in-person school. Finally, please keep in mind that any lost or damaged devices will be the responsibility of the student’s family. Please report any damages as soon as you can to the student’s teacher.  

Yes, please call or email your child’s principal. The principal will make arrangements for you to pick up the device from school.

Parents and students are encouraged to reach out to your teacher to gain assistance. All Washington Community School teachers will work regular school hours from 7:45 to 3:15 on distance learning days.  Teachers' ability to respond to items may be delayed when they have breaks during their in-person teaching. During eLearning Days, teachers will conduct live instruction through Google Meet with students. Questions can be asked through email, Google Classroom, Google Meets, or through the teacher’s designated classroom communication method (Talking Points, Class Dojo, etc.)
